Henry deSoto claimed the Mississippi Delta region for Spain in his explorations during the 1540’s. It was a naive gesture, just as it was later when the British, French, French Acadians, and eventually Americans tried to do the same. What the Europeans never understood was that this land had already been claimed, it would not be claimed again. To go a step farther, these European settlers were not so much claiming, as they themselves were claimed. Yes, the beauty and mystique of New Orleans existed before the city itself. It was the draw of the Source, and the source magick that drew these people over and over again to this part of the continent. Some understood the powers at work, but many did not. They only knew that once enthralled by the Lower Mississippi Delta, they could not bear to be anywhere else. It was this way with the Europeans, it was this way with the Native American Indians who inhabited this area long before being ‘discovered’. Their society, agricultural in nature, was steeped in ritual, sacrifice, and legends. These inhabitants worked the land, embraced the fae magick, and loved the landscape deeply.

New Orleans was founded in 1718 by the French. In the years that followed both the French and  Spanish laid claim to the city and the surrounding area. Still, regardless of which country or king thought they ruled, none of them did. The fae worked their magick, prepared for the seemingly endless immigration, and made their plans. Several large fires in the 1700’s wreaked havoc on the city, and each time she rebuilt. She healed herself. Make no mistake, by now, less than one-hundred years after being founded New Orleans was the living breathing heart and soul of the area.The fae understood this as well as the mortals who drew upon her power. New Orleans, with her energy, her ebb and flow, and her roots growing deep into the very fabric of the land was now the incarnation of Source Magick. By adoption, or by proxy, the city was now a living entity and from her flowed the magick so many relied upon for their survival.

New Orleans, they realized, must always survive. No matter the cost.

On January 8, 1815 British troops led by General Edward Pakenham attacked the city of New Orleans in an attempt to sever critical supply lines during the War of 1812. The city defenders, led by General Andrew Jackson were outnumbered 2:1 yet were still able to hold off the attackers. Later historians would credit the tenacity of the defenders as well as an elaborate series of defensive earthworks that held the invaders at bay. The defense of New Orleans was a decisive victory over the British invaders.

What the history books don’t mention is that much of the defense was coordinated by an elaborate “underground” network of witches and voodoo practitioners as well as a host of other paranormal entities. Hard at work to save their beloved city, they worked as best they knew how to protect her. These practitioners, and in some cases monsters, harassed and intimidated the British troops and were instrumental in turning the tide of the battle in favor of the citizens of New Orleans. And while no American General, Jackson included, ever spoke of such a coalition, it has always been spoken amongst the fae as truth that a top of the top military echelon were aware of the help they received and in what manner.

Fast forward to April 25 1862. Union forces in an armada of gunboats were bearing down on the city to take it from the Confederacy in the War Between the States. Confederate troops were outgunned, outmanned, and in every way outclassed by the overwhelming Union forces. There would be no repeat of 1815. The forces were simply too overwhelming and the black arts practitioners knew that there was nothing they could do to change the inevitable outcome. New Orleans would be sacked. It was time to implement the plan that the fae devised so many years before.

At the point of the civil war, New Orleans (the soul/spirit/the feminine) pulled the city into the mists, leaving a facade for them to fight over. This pull back created a world in which three levels were created. The impact from this branching broke the timeline into three parts, one in which Magick does not exist, one where there is balance and magic and technology coexist, and one in which magick rules and technology is nearly non-existent. There will be areas in which denizens are able to pass through into the different levels of magic. When magical denizens cross into magic areas, their true natures are revealed.

At the point of the battle of New Orleans, all sourcers came together to protect the city from the onslaught. Drawing on their deep connection with source magic they took too much, sapping the connection with the ley lines, depriving the rest of the world of the magic. Magic that used to exist all around the world vanished, leaving only the slightest trickle from the Source origin. The source origin being NOLA, since the fracture, the source has been regaining strength. Calling out to those who need it’s power. It’s Sourcers.
